Subject: Re: The IOI response to the conflict in Gaza
Dear Vered Ariel-Nahari,
First of all, I would like to clarify that Israeli students have not been banned from participating in the IOI. Four Israeli students are still allowed to compete, but they must do so under the IOI flag until the ban is lifted by another General Assembly
(GA) vote. In fact, a similar ban has been in place for Russia and Belarus since 2022, and their students have competed in IOI 2022, IOI 2023, and IOI 2024 under the IOI flag.
As President, I do not have the authority to overrule the GA's decision. However, I have made my position clear to the IOI committee.
I would like to share with you the message I sent to the committee.
I would also try to convince our GA on lifting the ban in our next
GA meeting.
Best regards
Sun Teck TAN

I made this announcement as it was the decision of the General Assembly. However, we all know that these sanctions will not bring about any positive outcomes, as the wars continue, driven by political agendas and power struggles. Instead, these measures have divided our communities, with the real victims being the young contestants.
This risks sowing seeds of hatred in the minds and hearts of our youth, who may one day become the leaders continuing these cycles of conflict.
We must recognize that peace begins with us. Let us not allow political issues to influence the IOI or distract us from our mission of nurturing young talent in computing and informatics. As leaders of the Olympiad, we have a responsibility to promote peace and uphold the values of our community, focusing on developing the next generation of scientific minds, free from political and diplomatic interference.
In conclusion, I urge all of us to reflect on our shared responsibility to ensure that the IOI remains a platform for unity, learning, and scientific excellence, free from the influence of political conflict.
Let us stay focused on our mission to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in computing and informatics, and demonstrate that through science and collaboration, we can build a better, more peaceful future for all.
